It’s always easy to say that a pitcher belongs in the bullpen. We see it when a pitcher heads to the bullpen that he throws harder. His strikeouts rise. He doesn’t have to use that third pitch, the one that hurts him as a starter. He doesn’t have to go through the lineup more than once. There is value in that.

This spring will see a dominant reliever try to make the transition ... Read More

One of the more surprising actions from the early hot stove season was when Rafael Soriano opted out of his contract with the Yankees that would’ve paid him $14 million for the 2013 season. Soriano was coming off of an excellent season for the Yankees as he ably filled the closer role for the Yankees when Mariano Rivera was lost for the year. That part of it made sense as Soriano would’ve returned ... Read More

The 2013 Kansas City Royals are going to enter Spring Training with the same type of hope that they had last season. The organization believes that it has all of the pieces in place to make a run at a playoff spot after yet another disappointing season. The 2013 Royals are better equipped for that hope given their rotation additions, but they are still not a sure thing. Questions run abound within the ... Read More

Usually, the market for starting pitchers is one that develops rather quickly. With a scarcity of quality, reliable arms, teams will often strike quickly to acquire a high end starter. Many deals tend to be overvalued, but the basic rules of supply and demand dictate this type of spending. This offseason has really been quite similar. Zack Greinke, a name brand without an ace resume, got paid the ... Read More

The Hall of Fame voting may have turned out to be a negative for Major League Baseball, but Bud Selig and Michael Weiner took a historic step the day after the zero vote ballot. Major League Baseball and the Players Association announced that they have modified the joint drug prevention agreement to add in-season, unannounced blood testing for human growth hormone. Perhaps even more significant, ... Read More

With the way some talk about Lance Berkman, one would think the switch hitting outfielder/first baseman is in his early 40’s. While the 14 year veteran had contemplated retirement this winter, he has decided to return for his age 37 season. Berkman agreed to a one year deal with a vesting option for an additional year for $10 million with the Texas Rangers. The switch ... Read More

Scott Boras is the best agent of all-time. While he is much maligned in most circles, he is the number one agent in terms of maximizing his client’s value. Every winter seems incomplete until we can say that Boras hoodwinked another team into overpaying for one of his players. We are still waiting for it this winter as two of Boras’ clients are still waiting to find ... Read More

More than any other team in professional sports, the New York Yankees define the word polarizing. The Yankees’ brand is the most popular in the world. Yet, as much as the brand leads in merchandise sold and worldwide popularity, there is a seemingly equal number of people who have an intense dislike for the New York baseball club. For the Yankees, there is no in between. ... Read More

More than any other year, the current Hall of Fame ballot is one of the most difficult in recent memory. And, that statement doesn’t even take into account the whole steroids controversy. A voter has the daunting task of completing a ballot that contains so many Hall of Fame worthy players on it.

The process is quite simple. A writer who has been a member of the Baseball Writers Association ... Read More

In what is becoming an increasingly rare moment, a trade was strictly about baseball. The Mariners and Angels agreed to swap starting pitching Jason Vargas for first baseman/designated hitter Kendrys Morales in a deal that filled needs for both teams. The deal wasn’t about money, rebuilding, or anything other than improving each team. While neither team is getting a superstar, the deal makes sense ... Read More

There is nothing ever simple when it comes to the New York Mets. The organization has a habit of making something that should be very good into something that can uncomfortable and, at times, classless. It is a characteristic that is established by the ownership group as Fred and Jeff Wilpon continue to deny that the Mets are operating like a small market club in the League’s biggest market. ... For the second consecutive winter, the Los Angeles Angels have worked quietly and then struck a deal with the most prolific player on the market. Last year, it was Albert Pujols, who was signed to a 10 year $240 million contract. The 2012 Angels didn’t start well, got hot when Mike Trout was finally called to the Major Leagues, and weren’t able to catch the division winning A’s and Wildcard ... Read More

During the Winter Meetings in Nashville, there was quite a buzz over a proposed three team deal that involved the Indians and Diamondbacks. The deal never came to fruition in Nashville, but a week later finally saw a three team deal struck. The Cincinnati Reds brought it all together as their willingness to part with Didi Gregorius, their young 22 year old shortstop. They are willing because of the presence ... Read More
